For anyone who's a fan of the Red Planet, this latest simulation from the European Space Agency is essential viewing. Constructed from data collected by the agency's orbiting Mars Express craft, it shows a 600km flight over an area known as 'Atlantis Chaos' within the Atlantis basin. The video captures the rocky plains of the surface of Mars in amazing detail and shows off ancient cliffs, craters and canyons in the process. The basin itself is believed to have been created by a massive impact around four billion years ago. The surface of Mars contains the deepest known canyon and the highest known mountain in the solar system It exists in a region of Mars called Terra Sirenum, located in the planet's southern hemisphere.
